The need
A mixed fleet of excavators and haul trucks uses many types of cylinder, each needing its own way to be repaired or replaced.
How the support grew
Rod and barrel repairs
Chroming, polishing and honing individual rods and barrels.
Complete cylinders
Whole cylinders repaired and returned, for Liebherr and Hitachi excavators.
New cylinders
A set of six new cylinders for the Liebherr R9400, after technical talks on design, materials and manufacture.
Cylinder exchange
For CAT 777, 785 and 793 trucks, a new or remanufactured cylinder from a pool replaces the one removed.
About the cylinder support
How an exchange works
The mine’s replacement forecasts decide which cylinder types are prepared. When a cylinder comes off, one from the pool goes on, and the removed cylinder returns for assessment.
Inspection, remanufacturing and redeployment then prepare it for a later exchange, so the replacement does not wait for the customer’s own cylinder to be restored.
Repaired or remanufactured
- Repair fixes specific faults so a component can return to service, for example a rod or barrel repair.
- Remanufacturing takes the whole component apart, inspects it, replaces or reconditions its parts and rebuilds it to a defined specification.
What the figures measure
The 100% is cylinder-support coverage across repair, new supply and exchange at Ukhaa Khudag. It is not fleet availability, and not the exchange programme alone.
The pool also holds cylinders for other equipment. The excavator repairs cover Liebherr R9250, R9400 and R996 and Hitachi EX3600 machines. The six new R9400 cylinders are not counted in the exchange figures.
